Terms of service

Effective 21 October 2026

The short version: Steepbook is free to use, your tea log belongs to you, and the brewing guidance in the app is a starting point, not a guarantee.

These terms apply when you use the Steepbook app on iPhone, Android or the web, or this website. By using Steepbook you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

Using Steepbook

Steepbook is free. You may install it and use it for your own personal, non-commercial tea brewing. Please don't copy, resell or redistribute the app, and don't use it to break any law. Apple's App Store terms or Google Play's terms also apply to how you download and update the app.

Your data

Everything you enter in Steepbook belongs to you. It is stored on your device, and in your own iCloud or Google Drive if you turn on sync, as explained in the privacy policy. Because there is no Steepbook server, we can't recover your log for you. Keeping a backup is up to you: turn on sync, or export your log as JSON or CSV from Settings.

Sync services

Sync uses Apple iCloud or Google Drive under your own account, and their terms apply to that storage. Steepbook can't control those services and isn't responsible if they are unavailable, change how they work, or lose data.

Brewing guidance

Steepbook suggests starting points for leaf, water temperature and steep times, fixes for a weak or bitter cup, articles and recipes. They are common, widely published ways of brewing tea, written in our own words. A vendor's own brewing notes for a tea come first. Brand and product names belong to their owners and are used only to identify teas and teaware.

How a tea tastes depends on the leaf, its age and storage, your teaware, your water and your taste, so a starting point that suits one person may not suit you. Treat every suggestion as a starting point and adjust by taste. Hot water and boiling kettles burn: take care when you brew.

Optional tips

Tips are voluntary and unlock nothing. Tips are in-app purchases processed by Apple or Google, and each applies its own terms, including any refund policy. Tips are otherwise non-refundable, except where the law requires a refund.

No warranty

Steepbook is provided "as is". We work to keep it accurate and reliable, but we can't promise it will always be available, error-free or suitable for a particular purpose.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, Steepbook is not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the app, including lost data, wasted tea or damaged teaware. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that can't be excluded.

Ending use

You can stop using Steepbook at any time by deleting the app. If you have sync turned on, you can remove its cloud copy and revoke access from Settings first, as described in the privacy policy.

Changes

If these terms change, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. Continuing to use Steepbook after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
